Bozhanov hints GERB shielding Peevski crew

Opposition lawmakers questioned whether government officials seek the removal of sanctioned figures from international blacklists. Bozhidar Bozhanov from Yes Bulgaria asked if the ruling coalition pursues relief for Delyan Peevski and associates from British and Magnitsky Act restrictions after former Foreign Minister Mariya Gabriel previously advocated for Bulgarian citizens.

Martin Dimitrov from the Continue the Change coalition warned that pension contribution increases totaling 10 percent would add 100 leva monthly expenses for households with two average earners. The opposition economist said the Budget 2026 proposal represents one of the steepest tax expansions in recent years and will expand unreported employment while reducing commercial activity.

Dimitrov criticized the authorities for rejecting dozens of spending-reduction bills that address hospital procurement practices, patient notification systems, and civil servant contributions. His coalition opposes progressive taxation proposals that would reduce government revenues.

The lawmaker defended flat tax policies implemented years ago that boosted collection rates. He warned progressive structures would drive businesses into the informal sector and diminish budget receipts.
