Bulgaria’s workers starve on fake wages

A single worker in Bulgaria requires 1,547 lev monthly to meet basic needs, while a three-person household with a young child needs 2,785 lev, according to September 2025 data from the Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria. Deputy Director Violeta Ivanova of the Institute for Social and Trade Union Research presented findings showing costs rose 1.4 percent quarterly and 6.4 percent annually.

Nearly 60 percent of Bulgarian workers earn below subsistence levels, though this proportion has declined as wages increase. The national minimum wage equals just 54 percent of what one person needs in a three-member family, making it the lowest among European Union member states.

Food prices continue climbing faster than EU averages, particularly for bread, fruit, chocolate and cheese. The confederation advocates for official state measurement of living wages based on 2024 International Labor Organization standards and seeks to align minimum wage with subsistence costs.
