Sofia drowns as Terziev feud festers
Boris Bonev warned that Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev risks fighting high prices rather than organized crime after the municipality partially canceled its waste collection contract. The Save Sofia councilor said the decision to terminate service for Zone 3, covering Poduyane, Slatina ,and Izgrev districts, came too late despite being correct.
Bonev criticized the mayor’s failure to build municipal waste capacity instead of contracting private companies linked to figures with criminal nicknames. He said 1.5 million residents face mounting garbage while authorities campaign rather than organize collection services. District mayors in the three affected areas lack equipment to handle waste from 200,000 people.
The councilor accused officials of lying about the progress of cleaning in the Krasno Selo district, where service dropped from 9 trucks before the crisis to 3 currently. Bonev said residents can see conditions worsening as the Garbage Plant prepares to remove containers. He called the situation professionally mishandled with insufficient planning for alternative collection methods.
