Bulgaria runs on fumes as funds dry

Bulgaria maintains adequate fuel reserves to meet demand for an extended period, according to Asen Asenov, chairman of the State Agency for State Reserve and Wartime Stocks. The agency holds 90 days’ worth of supplies as mandated by law, and private companies maintain additional operational stockpiles that supplement government holdings.

The reserves assume zero production and imports when calculated, providing substantial coverage for commercial and consumer requirements. Asenov told BGNES that his agency conducts monthly inspections at both government facilities and private sector storage locations to verify inventory levels.

The State Reserve lacks funding to expand current stockpiles but stands ready to acquire more fuel if parliament approves dedicated resources. Asenov said his agency regularly coordinates with the Energy Ministry, Interior Ministry, Transport Ministry, and Customs Agency on fuel supply matters.

The chairman confirmed ongoing communication with private operators following American sanctions against Lukoil, though he provided no details about potential supply chain impacts.
