Health fund unlocks €260M for medics pay
Bulgaria’s health insurance fund allocated 260 million euros for medical staff compensation in its 2026 spending plan. National Health Insurance Fund director Petko Stefanovski said the 5.537 billion euro budget represents a 14 percent increase over current funding levels.
Resident physicians will earn 1,860 euros per month under terms that match their demands for 150 percent of average national wages. Nurses and midwives receive guaranteed minimums of 1,550 euros, representing 125 percent of typical earnings. The central government will transfer salary funds rather than drawing from health contribution revenues.
Supervisory Board Chairman Yavor Penchev confirmed that parliament will vote on the proposal after officials complete negotiations on the distribution methodology with the Bulgarian Medical Union. He said political consensus protects the compensation increases from budget cuts. The Joint Management Council approved salary provisions during regular proceedings on Tuesday.
