Budget protest unites rivals, eurozone debate flares

The political party Continuing Change has organized a protest and a blockade of the National Assembly building to prevent the adoption of the next national budget. Party leader Asen Vassilev stated the demonstration reflects public dissatisfaction with a budget he claimed takes money from citizens to fill government coffers.

GERB leader Boyko Borisov accused the protesters of actually opposing Bulgaria’s entry into the eurozone, suggesting their true goal was to occupy parliament and block the first budget in euros. Vassilev rejected this, asserting his group would oppose any budget involving theft, regardless of its currency.

The Vazrazhdane party, led by Kostadin Kostadinov, pledged to join the blockade but stipulated that the protest must mirror their own assertive style, not involve symbolic acts like displaying pink piggy banks. Vassilev responded that any citizen opposed to the financial measures was welcome to attend.
