Police probe EU farm fund fraud in Burgas
The National Police, acting for the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, has conducted searches in an investigation into alleged European agricultural subsidy fraud. The probe focuses on a company accused of submitting false information in its applications for EU agricultural support between 2023 and 2025.
Authorities allege that the company provided fraudulent data to the Municipal Agricultural Service in Burgas, with the suspected involvement of high-ranking officials from the Ministry of Agriculture who certified the information. Searches were executed at the Regional Agricultural Service, the company’s office, and a senior official’s residence, resulting in the seizure of documents, digital data, and mobile phones.
Investigators believe the scheme involved an organized criminal group comprising public officials and individuals linked to the beneficiary company, illegally acquiring funds and causing significant financial damage to the EU and national budget. Preliminary estimates place the annual losses at several hundred thousand euros.
