Bulgaria faces EU court over ammonia emissions
The European Commission is referring Bulgaria, Lithuania, Portugal, and Sweden to the Court of Justice of the EU for failing to meet their air pollutant emission reduction commitments. European regulations require member states to establish national programs for achieving specific reduction targets between 2020 and 2029.
According to the Commission, Bulgaria, Portugal, and Sweden did not fulfill their obligations regarding ammonia emissions. Lithuania failed to reduce its emissions of nitrogen oxides and non-methane volatile organic compounds.
The infringement procedure began with formal notices sent to fourteen non-compliant countries. After assessing subsequent data and finding persistent shortcomings, the Commission decided to proceed with legal action against these four nations, deeming their efforts insufficient.
