Bulgaria braces for euro wage shakeup

Bulgaria’s social insurance and health fund oversight boards will examine 2026 budget proposals on Wednesday, marking the first time either institution has prepared spending plans denominated in euros. The social security framework sets minimum wage and insurance thresholds at 605 euros monthly.

Workers earning above-average salaries face adjusted contribution limits under the draft plan. Maximum insurable income rises to 2,352 euros, equivalent to approximately 4,600 leva, representing an increase exceeding 450 leva from current levels.

Health insurance contributions will remain unchanged despite budget adjustments, according to unofficial sources. The National Health Insurance Fund has not released its complete financial proposal to the public.
