Bulgaria heading for bankruptcy with reckless budget
Bulgarian legislator Radostin Vassilev warned that his country faces financial collapse under the current budget proposal, criticizing what he called inadequate wage increases and rising fiscal burdens. The MECH party leader said the 1,213 leva minimum salary remains the European Union’s lowest while maternity benefits and social security costs continue climbing.
Vassilev accused Prime Minister Boyko Borisov of repeatedly adjusting budget figures in response to public criticism, describing the process as elastic and reactive. He argued the opposition holds little power because the DPS-New Beginning faction backs the governing coalition of three parties.
The lawmaker predicted Borisov’s downfall would stem from governing alongside Delyan Peevski rather than budget disputes, saying this contradicts voter preferences from recent elections. Despite broad reservations about government spending plans, MECH will back funding designated for young physicians, though Vassilev suggested alternative approaches might prove more effective.
