Bulgaria takes decisive step towards European integration, says Zhelyazkov
Bulgarian Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov announced that his nation will advance European integration significantly when it adopts its first euro-denominated national budget on January 1, marking progress in a transformation effort spanning more than three decades. Speaking at a Center for the Study of Democracy conference in Sofia focused on defense and democratic values, Zhelyazkov expressed confidence that parliament would approve the financial framework.
The centrist Euro-Atlantic coalition government aims to strengthen institutional capacity for protecting democratic principles through technological innovation, cybersecurity enhancement, and diversified energy infrastructure, according to the prime minister. He emphasized that European security requires both shared values and practical defense capabilities rather than relying on ideology alone.
Bulgaria additionally seeks membership in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development to deepen integration with international partners while supporting Ukraine’s democratic development within a unified European framework, Zhelyazkov stated at the event.
