Bulgarian mountain rescuers ready for winter with new gear

Mountain rescue operations in Bulgaria have transformed dramatically as air ambulances conducted dozens of emergency evacuations over the past year, a sharp increase from when helicopters appeared only during major international competitions. The Bansko mountain rescue service has become one of the nation’s best-equipped units through contributions from more than 60 donors who funded specialized vehicles for search dogs, thermal imaging drones and advanced gear.

Rescuer Ivaylo Valeyuv said the team acquires updated equipment annually, with thermal cameras attached to one drone while a second unit awaits upgrades. These devices proved essential after volunteers hired an outside pilot during a search operation that demonstrated the technology’s effectiveness and sparked fundraising efforts. The squad prepares for winter with equipment inspections at ski area stations while coordinating with helicopter crews to establish landing zones where accidents occur most frequently.

Nasko Ukov from the rescue team said helicopters are being fitted with winches as training progresses toward European standards of organization. However, volunteers still await legislation to regulate their work and guarantee job protection during emergencies. Most rescuers serve without pay, and Ukov stressed these professionals, who risk their lives, deserve proper legal recognition rather than continued delays from government officials.
