Bulgarian potato farmers struggle as imports flood market
Bulgarian potato farmers are facing a large harvest this year, but prices are not expected to rise. Mass imports of cheap potatoes from abroad are pushing prices down, says Todor Dzhikov, head of the National Association of Potato Producers.
A dry spring, heat, and lack of rainfall have hurt local production. Recent rains and dry soil are making harvesting harder.
While Bulgaria’s crop is weak, foreign potatoes are flooding the market, pushing down prices.
Farmers call for better support from the Ministry of Agriculture to manage risks, as weather extremes can hurt yields and quality.
