Bulgaria’s banknotes hit four-year low as cash use declines

As of September 2025, the number of banknotes in circulation in Bulgaria has dropped to its lowest level in four years, with 533.69 million banknotes in the country. This marks a 4% decrease from August and a nearly 12% decrease from September 2024, amounting to 71.2 million fewer banknotes. The most common banknotes in circulation are the 50 leva notes (214.6 million) and 100 leva notes (133.1 million).

The total value of cash has also declined to 26.55 billion leva, the lowest since May 2023. In contrast, household deposits have risen, with citizens’ savings reaching 95.417 billion leva by the end of August, up 12.7% from the previous year. Bulgaria is set to switch to the euro starting January 1, 2026.
