Chattogram port tariff hikes trigger fears of rising import-export costs

After the Chattogram Port Authority’s tariff changes on 15 October, HR Lines Limited and Maersk Line announced freight rate hikes. HR Lines will charge an extra $30 per loaded container and $20 for empty containers on HCP contracts, and $25 per loaded TEU and $15 for empty ones on FIO contracts. Maersk Line raised its terminal handling charge for a 20-foot container from $120 to $165.

Business leaders warn that these increases, averaging a 41% rise in vessel and logistics costs, will raise import-export expenses and impact consumers. The Port Users Forum has called for a review, urging the CPA to consult with stakeholders for fair rates. Ameer Humayun Mahmud Chowdhury, the forum’s convener, said the hikes are a concerning sign for businesses.
