Chemical fire in Mirpur kills 16, sickens 50 more
At least 50 people have been hospitalized due to chemical poisoning from a fire in a chemical warehouse in Mirpur’s Shialbari area, which continues to emit toxic fumes more than 21 hours after the blaze started. Though the fire has been controlled, flames persist in the warehouse due to the highly combustible materials stored there, complicating firefighting efforts.
Workers from nearby garment factories, including those owned by Rising Group, inhaled the toxic air on Wednesday morning and fell ill, with many being admitted to local hospitals. Some factories were shut for the day. The fire, which broke out around 11 am on Tuesday, has claimed at least 16 lives, mostly due to inhaling the toxic fumes.
