CID collects DNA samples to identify Mirpur fire victims
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has begun collecting DNA samples from the families of 16 victims killed in Tuesday’s deadly fire in Mirpur. As of Thursday morning, six families have provided their DNA samples to the CID forensic lab.
The bodies of the victims, who died in the fire at a Sialbari, Rupnagar garment factory, will only be handed over after DNA profiling is completed. Some families have claimed the same bodies, so DNA testing is being done to avoid confusion.
The Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) has collected bone and tissue samples from six of the victims for autopsies, with the remaining 10 bodies’ samples to be taken soon. Family members have been asked to provide their DNA at the CID lab in Malibagh.
The fire, which started in the garment factory and spread to an adjacent chemical warehouse, killed 16 people. While the factory fire was extinguished on Tuesday, the chemical warehouse fire continued to burn into Wednesday.
