Crime surges in Dhaka’s Geneva Camp
A 23-year-old man died on Thursday after an explosion wounded him at Geneva Camp in Mohammadpur. Md Zahid worked at a mobile repair shop and was caught between fighting groups when a bomb detonated near him at 3:30 a.m. Medical staff at Dhaka Medical College Hospital declared him dead after he arrived from another facility. Police officer Kazi Rafiq Ahmed said authorities arrested 1,000 suspects and filed 250 cases since he joined two months ago.
The 7.50-acre settlement has recorded nine killings over 12 months as criminal organizations clash over narcotics sales. About 500 dealers operate from 30 locations and generate 15 million taka annually from illegal substances. Army personnel seized 32 crude bombs from the area two days before the fatal blast. Dhaka University professor Tawohidul Haque said poverty and unemployment push residents toward criminal activity that requires social solutions beyond enforcement.
