CU ocean satellite station nears launch

Chittagong University will complete the construction of Bangladesh’s first ocean satellite ground station by early November for trial operations. The facility receives data from 11 Chinese satellites to monitor cyclones, tsunamis, and coastal erosion while tracking sea temperature and marine conditions. Professor Mohammad Muslem Uddin said equipment installation will finish soon, and testing runs through mid-December before full operations begin next year. The system stores 224 terabytes of information for government agencies and private companies.

Bangladesh currently depends on American and Indian meteorological services that require 20 to 30 hours for storm analysis and warnings. The new station will provide alerts 48 to 72 hours in advance of severe weather events, when operational. China’s Second Institute of Oceanography provides 600 million taka worth of technical support for the 700 million taka project. Vice Chancellor Muhammad Yeahia Akhter said universities across the country will access real-time ocean data for research purposes.
