Crowds swarm Maravijaya festival for cheap goods

The annual Tazaungdine festival at Maravijaya Pagoda has drawn thousands of pilgrims and visitors from Nay Pyi Taw and other parts of Myanmar since celebrations began on the evening of Monday. This year’s event features more than 300 vendor stalls offering products from micro, small and medium enterprises, regional cuisine representing various ethnic groups, and handicrafts from across the nation. Entertainment highlights include nightly theatrical productions by renowned performer Po Chit, whose modern stagecraft incorporates music, dance and comedy routines that have captivated large audiences.

Popular singers performing at the festival include Kai Zar, Wai La, Nay Min Ein, Hlwan Paing, Shwe Htoo and Ni Ni Khin Zaw, among many others. The performers are backed by Hi Bird Band and Runner Band. Attendees can browse displays of electric vehicles, sample traditional foods from Rakhine and Shan states, and purchase items from Mandalay, Magway and Ayeyawady regions at reduced prices.

Children enjoy carnival rides such as Ferris wheels and pirate ships set up near the grounds. The three-day celebration runs through Monday, giving festival-goers opportunities to participate in religious merit-making while experiencing Myanmar’s cultural traditions and contemporary entertainment outside Maravijaya Buddha Park.
