Customs net K136M in illegal goods at Yangon port
Customs officials working under the Illegal Trade Eradication Steering Committee confiscated unregistered merchandise worth approximately 136.25 million kyats during inspections at two locations on Thursday. Agents discovered one category of industrial products valued at 67.2 million kyats inside a shipping container at Myanmar Industrial Port. At Yangon International Airport, inspectors found four categories of electrical equipment worth 69.05 million kyats in traveler baggage. Neither shipment carried proper documentation.
The steering committee said smuggled products undermine licensed merchants by reducing their ability to compete in the marketplace. Unauthorized imports also deprive the government of tax revenue it should collect. Officials plan to intensify screening procedures and enforcement actions targeting contraband shipments.
Inspection teams opened formal proceedings against those responsible for both violations according to standard customs regulations. The committee emphasized that preventing illegal commerce protects both domestic businesses and state finances.
