Deep depression intensifies near Bangladesh coast

A weather system in the Bay of Bengal strengthened into a deep depression on Sunday and could become a cyclone as it moves northwest, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department reported. The system sat 1,340 kilometers south of Chattogram port at 6 a.m. with winds reaching 60 kilometers per hour and rough seas at its center.

Authorities ordered ports at Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra to display warning signal number one. Fishing vessels in the northern bay and deeper waters must return toward shore and exercise caution until conditions change, officials said.
