Demerdzhiev faults Mitov over Pazardzhik police reshuffle
Former Interior Minister Ivan Demerdzhiev criticized the recent transfer of a dismissed Pazardzhik police director to an advisory role under Minister Daniel Mitov, arguing the move undermines accountability after the official failed to properly manage security during local elections. Demerdzhiev told Bulgarian National Radio that such appointments prioritize obedience over competence and demoralize capable officers throughout law enforcement agencies.
Bulgaria allocated 4.26 billion leva for interior operations next year, with personnel expenses consuming most resources while technical equipment and infrastructure improvements remain inadequate. Demerdzhiev emphasized that salary increases alone cannot improve performance without proper weapons, training and analytical capacity to develop long-term strategic planning for the nation’s largest government system.
