Dhaka drive safe push hits city streets

Dhaka North City Corporation partnered with the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety to launch a public awareness campaign about new speed limit rules. The campaign began on Thursday at a ceremony attended by officials and road safety advocates to promote the Motor Vehicle Speed Limit Guidelines 2024. Vital Strategies provided technical assistance for creating promotional videos and posters that will appear on websites, social media platforms and digital displays throughout the capital.

The campaign features a widow whose husband died in a November 2023 traffic accident, urging motorists to respect speed restrictions. Officials said the guidelines set a 40-kilometer-per-hour limit on highways within urban zones and a 30-kilometer-per-hour limit on most other streets. City engineers emphasized that pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclists face the greatest danger from speeding vehicles. Authorities plan to distribute materials through police and transport agencies while expanding footpaths and crosswalks to protect vulnerable road users.
