Dimitrov demands inspection of Bulgaria’s oil reserves

Martin Dimitrov from We Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria called for immediate government inspection of Bulgaria’s mandatory petroleum reserves following American sanctions against Lukoil. The lawmaker told BNT on Sunday that ministers must verify the availability of reserves and disclose emergency measures if supplies fall short of requirements.

Dimitrov confirmed that existing stockpiles will last through December but pressed officials for complete transparency, including detailed figures. The energy specialist suggested that Bulgaria appoint a special representative to manage the refinery, or pursue an acquisition by a major Western corporation, as preferred alternatives.

Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov said on Saturday that the cabinet maintains a defined action strategy guaranteeing fuel availability until late 2025. Washington announced restrictions on Lukoil and Rosneft on Tuesday, Oct. 22, affecting the Burgas facility, which processes all Bulgarian crude oil.

Bulgaria faces a Nov. 21 deadline to establish new arrangements before banking prohibitions prevent Lukoil from conducting transactions with business partners. Experts warn that the company cannot operate beyond that date under the current sanctions enforcement.
