DUCSU leaders demand funds transparency amid crisis
Leaders of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union say the organization has no money and lacks financial records spanning 35 years. Students pay about 3.66 million taka yearly for union and hall fees, but administrators have not explained where the funds go. The university collected 21.6 million taka from 2019 to 2025, yet the union received just 3 million taka while 18 million taka remains unaccounted for.
Union Vice President Abu Shadik Kayem requested financial statements from 1990 forward three weeks ago but received no response. General Secretary SM Farhad said the union operates without funds and depends on sponsors. Treasurer HM Mosharraf Hossain called the situation embarrassing because the union has no bank account.
University Treasurer M Jahangir Alam Chowdhury promised a financial report within days. Union members scheduled a protest march for Sunday to demand transparency. The union held its first election since 1990 in 2019 but stopped functioning until elections resumed in 2025.
