SIM card limit to curb crime before elections
Bangladesh will limit how many SIM cards one person can register before the next national election, Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said on Sunday. Criminals often use cards registered to other people, making investigations harder when authorities trace the wrong individual, he told the 15th Advisory Committee on Law and Order at the Secretariat.
The government plans to cap registrations at seven cards per national identity card. Home Ministry Senior Secretary Nasimul Ghani, Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam, and two Border Guard Bangladesh generals attended the session.
Chowdhury said the measure addresses cases in which offenders remain unidentified because the SIM cards used in crimes belong to someone else. The restriction aims to reduce this fraud pattern ahead of voting.
