Erdogan urges US to press Israel on ceasefire

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged the United States to pressure Israel over violations of the Gaza ceasefire through possible sanctions or weapons embargoes. The NATO member has taken a mediator role in peace talks after Erdogan met with President Donald Trump at the White House last month. Ankara offered to join an oversight task force and said its military could serve in civilian or armed capacities to help reconstruct Gaza.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu opposed Turkish security forces entering the Palestinian territory when he spoke on Wednesday. Erdogan avoided his usual criticism of the Israeli leader and indicated that negotiations on Turkish participation remain fluid. He called on Gulf states to finance Gaza rebuilding efforts and said no single nation could manage the reconstruction alone.

Relations between the former allies collapsed as Ankara accused Israel of genocide in Gaza, while the Netanyahu government denied those claims. Erdogan told reporters that Hamas respects the truce while Israel continues breaking the agreement. The Turkish leader spoke to journalists upon returning from a visit to the Gulf region on Friday.
