Fakhrul pledges support for ethnic communities

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir pledged on Friday to address concerns facing ethnic minorities if his party wins power. He spoke at the Dhaka Wangala Festival, celebrating Garo culture at Banani Bidyaniketan School and College. Fakhrul said party leader Tarique Rahman promised in 2022 to build a rainbow nation where all communities contribute equally. The official stressed the importance of improving economic conditions for ethnic groups while protecting their cultural traditions.

Fakhrul told the Garo community members to embrace their identity as Bangladeshi citizens with full rights. He praised the late president Ziaur Rahman for creating the concept of Bangladeshi nationalism that recognizes all residents beyond just Bengalis. The Secretary General proposed establishing a cultural academy in Dhaka for smaller ethnic populations. BNP would provide government backing for the annual Wangala harvest celebration if elected to lead the country.
