Family of Sumeet Sabharwal demands independent crash probe
The family of late Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who died in the June 12 Air India crash in Ahmedabad, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court, seeking an independent investigation led by a retired judge. The petition claims the investigation by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is flawed, focusing solely on “pilot error” without proper technical analysis.
The family questions the premature activation of the Ram Air Turbine (RAT) and the possible failure of the aircraft’s systems, which the initial report overlooked. They also argue that the investigation team, dominated by aviation officials, lacks independence, violating international standards. Additionally, they criticize the leak of cockpit voice recordings, which they claim defamed the pilots.
The petition calls for a judicially monitored, expert-led investigation to ensure fairness and transparency, emphasizing the need to prevent similar incidents in the future.
