Floods devastate Southern Black Sea Coast as illegal landfills, bridges block waterways

Scientists from the National University Center for Geospatial Research and Technology identified the causes of floods on the Southern Black Sea Coast. In Tsarevo and “Elenite,” three critical points contribute to the flooding.

In “Elenite,” these are an illegal landfill, an underground tunnel that channels the river, and the “Negresco” apartment complex. In Tsarevo, three bridges along the river block the water’s flow, flooding properties.

The researchers use drones to map the submerged areas. They found that a 16-meter-high landfill narrows the riverbed, and the underground tunnel is only 9 meters wide, not 20 meters. They also identified the “Negresco” complex as a dam-like barrier. Despite gathering data for years, the scientists say no institutions have used it to prevent flooding or improve infrastructure.
