Gaza hostage swap marks end of bloody conflict

After the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and the release of hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, here’s a snapshot of the Gaza war’s key events:

The conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas launched a surprise attack, killing over 1,200 Israelis and taking 251 hostages. In response, Israel’s air and ground campaign left more than 67,800 Palestinians dead, mostly civilians, according to Gaza’s health ministry.

Hostage exchanges have occurred over months, with 141 hostages freed by early 2025, and Israel releasing over 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. A humanitarian crisis has unfolded, with widespread destruction and limited aid access, while the UN declared famine in parts of Gaza.

The conflict has drawn regional involvement, with Hezbollah in Lebanon and Huthi rebels in Yemen supporting Hamas. Israel’s actions have triggered retaliatory attacks from Iran, leading to regional escalation.

On October 9, 2025, a ceasefire agreement was reached, with international mediation, and the hostages were released under a 20-point plan proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
