Georgetown honors Bangladesh leaders and women activists

Georgetown University recently honored women democratic leaders and activists from around the world at an annual awards ceremony. Among the honorees were student leaders from Bangladesh’s anti-fascist uprising last year. The awards, called the “Hillary Rodham Clinton Awards,” were presented by Hillary Clinton at the university’s Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security.

The ceremony recognized Nobel laureate Maria Ressa, Pulitzer winner Anne Applebaum, the student protest leaders from Bangladesh, and Venezuelan women political prisoners for their efforts to protect democracy. Clinton praised the honorees, saying that women fighting against authoritarianism are often targeted by autocrats because they represent a powerful force for change.
