GERB moves to drop water fee plan
GERB party leaders will request the withdrawal of the water pricing legislation that passed initial parliamentary approval earlier this week. Nikolay Nankov, who chairs the regional development committee, acknowledged that poor messaging created public confusion about the proposed dual-component billing system. The measure would have charged property owners for network access alongside consumption-based rates.
Nankov said the proposal targets citizens with multiple residences rather than primary homeowners. GERB plans alternative legislation maintaining current rates for usage below 10 cubic meters while raising prices above that threshold. The party cited inadequate explanations from the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works as reasons for the reversal.
GERB deputies will propose service interruptions to exempt customers from payment obligations. The party argues that vulnerable populations should not face the same risks as owners who fill swimming pools with potable water. Current pricing structures fail to account for differences in household consumption patterns.
