Hamas demands release of top prisoners in ceasefire deal

Hamas is demanding that Israel include prominent Palestinians, such as Marwan Barghouti and Ahmad Saadat, in a list of prisoners to be released as part of a ceasefire agreement. The Israeli justice ministry announced 250 prisoners to be freed, excluding the high-profile figures, who are viewed as symbols of resistance by Palestinians. Barghouti and Saadat are serving long sentences for their involvement in deadly attacks.

As part of the deal, 20 Israeli hostages are expected to be freed by Monday. US envoy Steve Witkoff has promised to raise the issue with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, but Israel has rejected Hamas’s demand. The deal also includes the release of 250 Palestinian prisoners and the return of deceased hostages.
