Hamas to release Israeli hostages in Gaza as part of prisoner swap deal

Hamas will release 20 Israeli hostages on Monday as part of a prisoner swap deal, a senior Hamas official told AFP. The exchange will see nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners, including 250 serving life sentences, freed in return.

The deal is the first step in a broader agreement mediated by Qatar and Egypt after two years of conflict following Hamas’s October 2023 attacks. U.S. President Donald Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will chair a summit in Sharm el-Sheikh later that day, with over 20 nations attending.

Despite progress, challenges remain in securing long-term peace. Israeli officials say their operations target Hamas militants, while Hamas insists on maintaining its armed resistance.
