Harmanpreet says World Cup win could inspire girls

India’s captain believes a victory at the ODI World Cup would transform women’s cricket in her nation and inspire a new generation of players. Harmanpreet Kaur spoke with reporters on Saturday ahead of the final against South Africa in Mumbai.

The hosts will compete for their first title after reaching the championship match twice before in 2005 and 2017. India secured their spot by defeating Australia in an exciting semifinal. Kaur noted that the previous final appearance sparked significant growth for the sport, with more girls taking up the game. A triumph on Sunday could accelerate that progress at both international and domestic levels. Jemimah Rodrigues helped India chase down 339 runs against Australia with an unbeaten 127.

South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt suggested the home crowd pressure might benefit her team. The match will likely draw a capacity audience. Wolvaardt acknowledged the atmosphere would create an exciting opportunity while potentially weighing heavily on their opponents. Kaur welcomed having a fresh champion, saying the possibility has generated additional enthusiasm. She emphasized that reaching the final holds special significance for both the squad and their supporters.
