High Court seeks govt’s response on Khairul Haque bail request
The High Court directed the government on Sunday to justify denying bail to former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque in five criminal cases, one involving the murder of Jubo Dal activist Abdul Kaiyum Ahad. Justice ASM Abdul Mobin and Justice Md Sagir Hossain heard arguments from Senior Advocate Mansurul Haque Chowdhury, who represented Haque, while Attorney General Md Khairuzzaman and Barrister M Sarwar Hossain appeared for the state and Anti-Corruption Commission.
Police arrested Haque from his Dhanmondi home on July 24 and charged him in the Kaiyum Ahad killing. Authorities subsequently filed four additional cases against him in Narayanganj and Shahbagh between August and October.
Haque served as the country’s 19th chief justice from September 2010 until May 2011. He chaired the Law Commission under the Awami League administration before resigning on August 13 following the government’s collapse.
