HRW urges ASEAN to reject Myanmar vote

Human Rights Watch urged governments attending Southeast Asian summits in Malaysia to oppose Myanmar’s military plan for elections in December 2025. The regional meetings will take place in Kuala Lumpur from October 26 through 28, with Myanmar’s crisis among key discussion topics. The military government has ramped up attacks on civilians, arbitrary detentions, and forced conscription while suppressing democratic opposition ahead of voting scheduled to begin on December 28.

John Sifton from Human Rights Watch stated the junta lacks both the willingness and the ability to conduct credible polls that meet international standards. Armed resistance groups control large portions of Myanmar, preventing the military from organizing elections across most townships. The regime passed restrictive legislation on July 30 that criminalizes criticism of the electoral process.

United Nations officials and monitoring organizations have warned against the planned vote. Julie Bishop, the UN envoy for Myanmar, said the election could trigger more violence and weaken the country further. Former foreign ministers from the regional bloc issued a joint statement on October 11 calling for the complete rejection of what they termed a fraudulent election.
