ICC bars Karim Khan from Duterte war crimes case over conflict of interest
The International Criminal Court (ICC) has kicked out chief prosecutor Karim Khan from the war crimes case against ex-President Duterte of the Philippines over a possible conflict of interest. Khan, already facing a sexual misconduct probe, has been barred from overseeing the Duterte case, the court’s biggest active investigation. Duterte’s defense argued that Khan’s past work with the Philippines Human Rights Commission (PHRC) made him biased and unable to lead an impartial investigation.
The ICC’s Appeals Chamber agreed, ruling that Khan’s past ties to the PHRC could make him appear biased. Duterte, who led the Philippines from 2016 to 2022, is fighting charges linked to his deadly war on drugs. Deputy prosecutor Mame Mandiaye Niang is now handling the case.
