IMF’s Kristalina Georgieva lauds India’s economic reforms and growth
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva praised India on Thursday for its “very significant reforms,” which have contributed substantially to global growth. Speaking at a press conference during the IMF-World Bank meetings in Washington, she highlighted India’s progress in sectors like tax reform, infrastructure, digital development, and road connectivity, all of which have boosted its economic growth potential.
The IMF raised India’s growth projection for 2025 to 6.6%, citing a strong first quarter that has offset the impact of higher US tariffs on Indian imports. India’s economy grew at an impressive 7.8% in the April-July quarter, exceeding expectations.
Georgieva also lauded India’s bold policy initiatives, such as digital identity, and advised the country to pursue greater trade integration, noting the barriers India still faces in trade relations. She encouraged India to continue its successful reform efforts and consider reducing trade restrictions to further enhance global integration.
