Indian refiners prepare to cut Russian oil imports after Trump pressure
Some Indian refiners are preparing to reduce Russian oil imports following U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments that India had assured it would stop buying Russian oil to help end the war in Ukraine. India and China have been the largest buyers of discounted Russian crude since Europe stopped purchasing due to the 2022 invasion of Ukraine.
Refiners are expected to cut Russian oil imports starting in December, though November orders have already been placed. While the Indian government hasn’t formally instructed refiners to stop buying, discussions with the U.S. on trade and energy cooperation are ongoing.
India’s purchases of Russian oil have been a topic in trade talks, with the U.S. pressing for a reduction in imports to help secure a trade deal. Russia remains confident that its energy partnership with India will continue, with India seeking alternative discounted sources.
