Intel’s Panther Lake, 18A are Pat Gelsinger’s legacy

Intel’s recent product reveals are proof that the company’s future foundry game plan is all thanks to former CEO Pat Gelsinger’s groundwork. Panther Lake, Intel’s first 18A-based product, and the new Xeon CPUs are all part of the vision Gelsinger had to put Intel on top. When Gelsinger took the reins in 2021, Intel had no real foundry plan, so he pushed bold moves like ‘5N4Y’ and ‘IDM 2.0.’ His big bet? The 18A node—he poured all his confidence into it, and the results are what Intel is bragging about today.

His enthusiasm for Panther Lake wasn’t a fluke either. Gelsinger handed over working PTL samples to Lenovo just before stepping down. Today’s Intel is cashing in on his bets, even though the new boss, Lip-Bu Tan, will likely steer the next big leap with Nova Lake and 14A.
