Jamaat bloc demands referendum by November
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami led multiple political organizations in demanding the immediate adoption of the July National Charter and a referendum by November’s end. The coalition presented five demands at a National Press Club gathering on Wednesday morning, calling for proportional representation in both parliamentary chambers and equal conditions for all parties ahead of national elections.
The groups want accountability for alleged persecution and corruption by what they term the fascist government. They seek to prohibit the Jatiya Party and the 14-Party Alliance from participating in politics, claiming both groups supported authoritarian rule. Secretary Generals from Jamaat-e-Islami, Islami Andolan Bangladesh, Khilafat Majlis, and other parties attended the briefing.
The coalition plans to deliver a memorandum to election officials on Thursday and will announce additional programs at a press conference scheduled for Sunday. Representatives from eight religious and political organizations signed the joint statement outlining their platform.
