Japan’s opposition parties fight to block Takaichi’s bid for premier

Japan’s biggest opposition parties are gearing up for big talks Tuesday to figure out who’ll run for prime minister and kick the ruling crew out. This comes after the ruling alliance crumbled last week, throwing a wrench in Sanae Takaichi’s push to be the first female PM.

With Komeito ditching the 26-year partnership with the ruling LDP, the opposition’s chances of teaming up are up in the air. If they can join forces, they’ve got enough votes to block Takaichi, who just became LDP president but still needs lawmakers’ approval.

DPP president Yuichiro Tamaki said the three opposition parties’ top dogs are meeting to talk about uniting, but it’s not easy since their policies clash hard on key issues like defense and nukes.
