Johnny Depp set for Ebenezer Scrooge role
Johnny Depp will portray Ebenezer Scrooge in a new adaptation of the Charles Dickens tale for Paramount Pictures. Director Ti West leads the production from a screenplay by Nathaniel Halpern, with Andrea Riseborough cast in a supporting role. The studio plans to release the film on Friday, November 13, 2026. Emma Watts serves as producer, while Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman handle executive production.
The miserly London businessman is visited by three spirits who attempt to save him from eternal punishment. Previous versions of the story featured Alastair Sim in 1951, Bill Murray in Scrooged, Michael Caine in A Muppet Christmas Carol, and Jim Carrey in a 2009 adaptation. Robert Eggers develops another version at Warner Bros., with Willem Dafoe considered for the main character.
This marks Depp’s first major studio project since Fantastic Beasts in 2018. He lost his role in that series after a British court case went against him. A Virginia trial in 2022 found both Depp and Amber Heard liable for defamation. He recently completed Day Drinker with Penelope Cruz for Lionsgate ahead of a 2026 release.
