July uprising families hail Sheikh Hasina death verdict

Relatives of individuals killed during Bangladesh’s uprising expressed relief after the tribunal sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity, though they emphasized their demand for prompt execution of the verdict. Family members gathered at the court proceedings called for the public hanging of the ousted leader, with some stating that merely announcing the sentence holds limited meaning without bringing her back from India, where she has taken refuge.

Mitu Akhtar, whose brother died from a gunshot wound, insisted that implementation must occur to provide closure for bereaved mothers. Parents of other victims stressed the importance of holding all perpetrators accountable, including those who carried out orders and instigated violence. Survivors injured during protests urged international pressure to secure extradition, arguing that enforcement during the current administration’s tenure would prevent future authoritarian rule.
