Karen party vows peace, equality in Kayin polls
The Karen National Democratic Party presented its electoral strategy and governing principles during broadcast addresses delivered on Tuesday evening. Naw Thazin Tope, who serves as second secretary of the party’s central committee, outlined goals focused on building prosperity across Kayin State while strengthening national cohesion. Central executive member Saw Min Min Myaing delivered additional remarks in multiple Karen dialects targeting state legislative contests.
Party representatives detailed five core policy commitments addressing equal treatment for eight ethnic communities, maintaining political independence from external pressure, forming strategic coalitions with aligned organizations, pursuing constitutional reforms toward federal democracy and adopting balanced positions reflecting national conditions. Officials promised educational programs for minority youth, agricultural investment coordination with federal authorities, environmental protection measures and prisoner rehabilitation standards meeting international guidelines.
The organization emerged from a 2017 merger combining four regional Karen parties. Campaign messaging emphasized conflict resolution and equitable development through the party’s buffalo horns and frog drum symbol. Speakers urged Kayin voters to support candidates who would preserve literary traditions, cultural ceremonies and hereditary land management practices while addressing displacement caused by armed violence.
