Taunggyi Tazaungdine Festival extended due to weather
Organizers extended Myanmar’s Taunggyi Tazaungdine Festival through Nov. 9 after adverse atmospheric conditions prevented balloon competitions from proceeding as scheduled. The celebration originally planned to conclude on Tuesday, following a week of events beginning Oct. 29.
Dense fog and powerful winds forced the cancellation of launches during the previous 72 hours, though some participating teams released Nyameegyi balloons for spectators who remained at the venue. A representative from the Southern hot-air balloon team explained that poor visibility obscured aerial displays while gusty conditions complicated flight operations. The competitor acknowledged financial setbacks but said organizers felt obligated to accommodate visitors who traveled considerable distances.
Daytime releases commenced on Oct. 27 despite weather challenges affecting the 375-day balloons and 80 nighttime entries registered for this year’s competition. Night balloon categories include 37 Seinnapan designs, 25 measuring 22 feet and 18 standing 25 feet tall. Festival administrators hope improved meteorological conditions will allow remaining contestants to complete their scheduled performances before the extended deadline expires.
