Kaštelir-Labinci named top tourist village
The United Nations tourism agency recognized Kaštelir-Labinci among 52 outstanding rural destinations for 2025. The Istrian municipality earned recognition after four years of developing sustainable practices in line with UN standards. Officials credit local initiatives like Butiga, a municipal shop where farmers and winemakers sell regional products every week. Free Friday tastings let visitors sample goods from area producers.
Croatia operates more than 1,600 specialized tourism businesses with 70 percent focused on countryside hospitality. Istria County leads with 196 providers, while other regions trail behind. Tourism experts say eastern Croatia and Slavonia hold strong potential for expansion. One analyst noted Istria operates years ahead of other areas in developing visitor experiences that support local communities.
